According to urban legend, Microsoft likes to test potential recruits' analytical thinking by giving them brainteasers to see how they handled them. According to legend, when Nobel Laureate physicist Richard Feynman was interviewed, Microsoft asked him to explain why most manhole covers are spherical (as opposed to square). The scientist was alleged to have responded, possibly irritated, perhaps pedantic, and very likely falsely, "Why are circular manhole covers round?! Circular coverings are, by definition, round! It's a truism." For those of us who have yet to get our Nobel Prizes, our responses may have to be a bit less caustic when confronted with difficult interview questions. Here are a couple of the toughest questions interviewers ask so you may be more prepared:

WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO FOR FUN?

This one comes up frequently but deserves extra attention. Companies looking to hire value character. You can bet that at least one other applicant is equally, if not more, qualified than you. Character questions separate the wheat from the chaff and demonstrate to interviewers if you will fit into the company's culture. Do you enjoy going out to parties? Gamble? Do you watch UFC? Sure, no one will criticize you if you do these things sometimes, but do you want them to define you? PG-13 activities that demonstrate your dependability and determination will better showcase your outstanding character. Have you been a member of the same soccer team for five years? Do you help others? Do you like spending time with your children? Inform a potential employer about your activities.

What new capabilities would you bring to this organization that we don't already have?

With questions like these, pride and vanity are your stumbling obstacles. Oversell yourself, and your arrogance will come over. Giving away your finest ideas will cost you your best work before you've even been hired. The most straightforward answer is to highlight your track record of providing your former employers with what they lacked. Not the same accomplishment at three distinct businesses, but unique, inventive concepts tailored to each. This will indicate that you are a creative thinker who rapidly recognizes what is lacking in an organization.

TELL ME ABOUT YOUR LATEST/CURRENT ROLE.

No matter what, do not criticize your existing job. No one wants to hire a traitor. Choose the responsibilities you enjoy in your present position. However, demonstrate that you are capable of doing more than just what you are excellent at. You've reached your full potential; you're consistently exceeding expectations yet receiving no raise in income or responsibilities. That is why this position appears to be a good fit for you—you are looking for an employer who is eager to get the most out of you.

DO NOT MAKE THE INTERVIEW PROCESS TOO COMPLICATED.

In job interviews, honesty and the ability to demonstrate your accomplishments go a long way. So, when the tough questions come up, keep your cool. If you are adequately prepared, the answers to interview questions should be straightforward.
